Increasing mobility, Improving life quality

There are 2 keywords that we want to emphasize in this tagline: mobility and quality of life.

Mobility

Mobility means that we will be focusing on the principles transportation in an urban settings, which are: Moving People not goods or vehicles. Road development as the previous focus of development has its limit in terms of people moving capacity. Roads are not just for people, but also for goods and other services. With an urban megapolitan setting like Jakarta, with more than 8 million residents, and half of that number is commuting in and out of Jakarta everyday, the challenge is clearly not moving goods but moving people. How the people could moving around, in and out of the city, in comfortable and safe manner to conduct their business and social activities (mobility). The development of transportation in Jakarta should not just developing more roads, which getting harder and harder everyday, in terms of land acquisition. The development also must be focused on creating a public transport to move people efficiently and effectively to their destinations. The MRT systems was not design to “solve” traffic jam, since it would not be possible to be solved by the MRT system alone. Integration and coordination with other transportation systems, land use policy and development based on transportation (Transit-Oriented-Development) is also needed.

Quality of Life

Quality of Life is a major issues in the world today. During the World Urban Forum (WUF) 2006 held in Canada, it was predicted that by the year 2010, half of the world populations will be living in urban cities. In the developing world, many major cities cannot keep up with this explosion of growth, and these cities does not have the capacity to sustain so many people. This in turn will reduce the quality of life. In Jakarta, we also have this problem, with signs like pollution, frequent dengue outbreak, traffic jam, and access to clean water. MRT System will contribute to increase the quality of life, for example by reducing the air pollution caused vehicles or motorbikes, if people are trusting our services with their transportation needs.

Moving Jakarta into one of the leading modern

of operational excellence

Moving Jakarta is the highest responsibility that MRT Jakarta will have to bear. Learning from other cities with MRT system in place, when the systems is halted (for example due to strike), the whole city activities will be disrupted. Jakarta is not just a city, but the capital city of Indonesia, so the effect will be greater to not just the city but to the whole Indonesia. People of Jakarta will entrust us to move them to where they want to go. To obtain and maintain this trust, MRT Jakarta must provide an excellent level of operational activities. Good is not enough.

Operational Excellence will be achieved through the use of international standards, similar to other MRT Systems of the world. This standards includes cleanliness, safety, reliability, comfort, and other operational standards. Excellence also means we must go beyond the standards, after we can achieve and maintain the standards.

With the MRT system in place, Jakarta is becoming one of Asian Major Cities who has world class transportation system in place. Every city guess, including foreign guess, could enjoy the same transportation services similar to what they experience in other Asian major cities, which are clean, safe, comfortable and reliable.

Explanation of the keywords in our mission are, Sustainable Excellence Service. Sustainable requires wisdom, wisdom to balance the short term needs to long term needs, to balance customer needs and organizational needs, to balance between idealism and organizational capacity, to balance between effectiveness and efficiency. A good services does not means trade off between the two. MRT Jakarta must be have the ability to judge its decisions to obtain the best balance with the focus to provide the best excellence service to our customer.

Safe. Safety in public transportation is the priority one issues to gain the public trust. Safety is not just how to handle crime, but also crisis handling due to natural or man-made disaster. MRT Jakarta will design, exercise and improve its risk management activities to handle these crisis.

Convenient. This is just a single expression , however to provide it will take complex and discipline activities. MRT Jakarta will approach convenience using the human senses: eyes, ears, nose, skin and mouth. Eyes, means Spotless Clean, all areas under MRT Jakarta management must be spotlessly clean, not just toilets, but also lifts, elevator, hallway etc. All signs must also be clear, concise but informative. All layouts are easy to understand.

Nose, means no area in the stations will have a bad smell. Ears, means no unnecessary disruptive sounds will be heard. Skins means all stations and trains will be in the optimum level of temperature for people movement. Mouth means no food or drinks in the stations that will not on be safe to eat or drink.

Reliable. Reliability could be simplify as “walk the talk”. When we say the train will be arriving in 5 minutes, it will be arriving in just that, not more not less. In the advanced modern airport in the world, when we arrived at this airport, we could go out from the plane and get a taxi in just 15 minutes. This requires correct design, continuous improvement, and discipline.
